According to a new Danish study, AF patients who consume omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that is contained in fish may decrease the risk of suffering from incident atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the linked AF risk follows a U-shaped curve, significantly lowered in the middle level of fish that was eaten when compared to the higher and lower levels. So far, studies have not confirmed whether consumption of omega-3 PUFAs can protect patients against AF events because of all the studies conducted so far, none of them have been unanimously conclusive.
“The U-shaped association found in our study may help to explain why studies have shown inconsistent results,” Prof Thomas Andersen Rix (Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark) told heartwire in an email. The studies have looked at varying levels of omega-3 PUFA intake, which would presumably have a range of effects on AF risk. The current findings agree with those that found lower AF risk at moderate-intake levels.
When the PUFAs is consumed daily at doses of .63 g, (about two servings a week) that level of intake level, he said, is “higher than the previous observational studies, in which the mean intakes were around 0.2 to 0.3 g omega-3 PUFA per day. Therefore, our study has more information regarding a high intake.”
AF is a heart condition that is characterized by patients suffering from irregular heartbeats and fluttering heartbeats. The condition is often treated with various anticoagulants like Warfarin. Another anticoagulant medication that was once often prescribed was Multaq. Multaq is made by Sanofi-Aventis and has been linked to serious side effects including a worsening of the heart condition, liver failure and lung toxicity. It is for this reason that the FDA has recommended that doctors only prescribe Multaq if all other medications fail to work.
If you or a loved one has suffered from liver failure or a worsening heart condition after being treated with Multaq, contact the attorneys at Greg Jones today for a free consultation. I am experienced at fighting multaq lawsuits and may be able to help you recover money for your injuries.
