Discovered late in 2018, it was found that certain generic versions of Valsartan and Valsartan HCTZ may have been manufactured and distributed with impurities that impose the increased risk of cancer. The FDA announced a nationwide recall of specific version of generic Valsartan and Valsartan HCTZ after it was found that they may have been contaminated with N-nitrosodimethylamine, more commonly known as human carcinogen.

On July 13, 2018 the FDA began recalling Valsartan manufactured by Chinese manufacturer Zhejang Huahai Pharmaceuticals and distributed by pharmaceutical giants Teva Pharmaceuticals, Major® Pharmaceuticals and Solco Healthcare.
It is reported that the hypertension drug may have been contaminated potentially for years, exposing users of the drug to an increased risk of the following cancers:
- Live Cancer
- Kidney Cancer
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Stomach Cancer
- Intestinal or Colon Cancer
- Bladder Cancer
In addition, the impurity may have also resulted in severe liver damage and kidney damage such as fibrosis, scarring, and abnormal functioning. It is believed that the longer one used the contaminated Valsartan, the better the chances are to develop these serious injuries.
